Mythology

Guru's (Jupiter) only son Kasa got trapped in demon's world and so he did penance towards Lord Narayana. After a long period Lord Narayana appeared before Guru and saved his son by sending Chakrathalwar. From that day onwards the place where Guru meditated became a temple. As Lord Narayana appeared before Guru in a stunning Ratha (vechicle) on the day of Chitra Star, the temple is named as Chitra Ratha Vallabha Perumal temple.

There are lot of festivals celebrated in this temple. Among them Marghali Vaikunta Ekadasi and Guru Peyarchi are notable

Speciality:

Lord Narayana along with his consorts are made up of sandal wood which is a rare feature. Lord Chakrathalwar and Guru both grace from their shrines as swayambu moorthis

As the name of the temple suggest, this temple is very famous for chitra nakshatra people. It is believed that if they visit this temple on auspicious days they will get rid of their planetary effects and lead a happy life.

Travel

This temple is seated in Kuruvithurai which is at a distance of 23 km from Madurai.

Bus : There are surplus buses to this temple from Madurai Periyar bus stand. On all auspicious days buses or autos will take you till the threshold of the temple.

Train : Madurai junction is the nearest one to this temple.

Airport : From Madurai airport it will take one hour to reach this temple.
