Sri Aurobindo Ashram - Pondicherry
Sri Aurobindo Ashram is a spiritual community founded in 1926 in Pondicherry. The Ashram initially started as a small group of two dozen disciples and as time passed, grew into a large and diverse community of almost 1600 members under the guidance of Mother, earlier known as Mirra Alfassa.
She was a French woman who was the spiritual collaborator of Sri Aurobindo, a renowned spiritual leader. The Ashram consists of an interconnected block of houses also including those in which Sri Aurobindo and the Mother lived for most of their lives.
In a white marble shrine at its centre, in a tree-shaded courtyard, lies the Samadhi, where their bodies are laid to rest. The inmates of this Ashram live and work in a number of buildings spread throughout the area.
The Ashram is administered by a public charitable trust named Sri Aurobindo Ashram Trust, formed by the Mother in 1955 which is managed by a board of five trustees. The basic requirements of food, clothing and shelter, as well as medical care, are looked after by the various departments of the Ashram and they provide everything needed for a decent and healthy life.
