Raj Nivas - Pondicherry
Raj Nivas serves as the official residence of Lieutenant Governor of Pondicherry. It was formerly known as Palais du Government and was built in the 18th century.
Raj Nivas served as a palace during French colonization. And it was once the official residence of the French Governor Dupleix. Raj Nivas shows a harmonious blend of Indian and French architecture.
Raj Nivas lies adjacent to Rue Jawaharlal Nehru on the North, Rue De Rangapoule on the South and Rue Saint Louis on the East and Rue Francois Martin on the West.
The major attraction of the Raj Nivas is the monolithic pillars which were brought here from the Gingee Fort after it was conquered in the year 1751. It has a well-maintained garden with a beautiful water monument at its centre.
The courtyard is surrounded by skillfully carved wooden pillars. The first-floor terrace is so admiring with decorated stonework of European design. Two canons are displayed on either side of the main gate.
