Auroville Pondicherry
Auroville, known as the "City of Dawn" is a small experiential spiritual community situated just 6 km north of Pondicherry. Mirra Alfassam, a French woman who is known as "the Mother" is the founder of this community and it was inaugurated on February 28th, 1968, in the presence of 5000 people.
She was the successor of the renowned Indian spiritual leader Sri Aurobindo. The architect Roger Anger is the designer of this city. This experimental township was set up with the objective of human unity where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities.
Over 2,000 people from 50 countries live harmoniously in this artificial village. Half of them are Indians, about 300 French people, 200 Germans and 150 Italians. Apparently, the land was completely barren when Auroville was established, but now it spread across 2,000 acres of land covered in thick jungle, planted by residents.
