Arikamedu Pondichéry
Arikamedu is the only city in India with an archaeological record of Roman presence. It is an ancient Roman trade centre which is hailed as the only port in India where the Tamilians traded with Romans.
It is a lesser explored archaeological site which is positioned on the right bank of Ariyankuppam River, in Kakkayanthope and is just 7 Km away from Pondicherry.
Arikamedu is a Tamil word which means 'eroding mount'. The history of the place dates back to the second century B.C. The Romans, Cholas and French had inhabited this place and they left their mark on this wonderful place.
Arikamedu was a major Chola port in the past which was later dedicated to bead making and trading with Roman traders. It was very popular for manufacturing amazing bead jewellery with both stone and glass.
The glass beads site here was regarded as the “mother of all bead centres” in the world. The Roman treasure trail and the Arikamedu river cruise will take you to a journey through its History lane.
