Statue of Mahatma Gandhi Monuments
Situated along the promenade of the Pondicherry beach, the statue of Mahatma Gandhi is a historical monument and a prominent landmark of the White town of Pondicherry. Built along the promenade it offers an excellent view of the Nehru statue and the old lighthouse.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was an independence leader who became the ‘Father of India’. Leading India to independence, he inspired many people in nonviolence and to this day continues to do so. This statue of Gandhi in Puducherry is the biggest Gandhi statue built in Asia. The granite pillars of the statue was brought from Gingee, Tamil Nadu and the construction of the statue was completed in 1965.
Among all the monuments in Pondicherry this is one of the best monuments to visit. Situated along the beach, this statue sends out a clear message on righteousness for which Mahatma Gandhi stood for. As you leave after enjoying the evening along the beach side visiting the statue, it feels as if a part of you is left behind.
