Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru who became the first prime minister of free India, was a prominent freedom fighter during the Indian struggle for independence. He is fondly known among children as ‘Chacha Nehru’. He spent seven years in England practicing law. Later he came back to India, got married and had a daughter named Indira Priyadarshini (Known under her married name as Indira Gandhi) who also became the prime minister of India later.

Nehru wanted to live in a free India but did not know the means to achieve it. After meeting Mahatma Gandhi, he develop definitive ideas of attaining freedom to his nation. Nehru became the president of the Indian National Congress in 1929 after which his involvement in freedom struggle became prominent. After a total of nine years in prison, Nehru along with Gandhi persisted for independence in India. On August 15th, 1947 when India became independent, Nehru became the first prime minister of free India. During his time as Prime Minister, he faced many challenges and overcame them. Among those were the Indo-Chinese dispute, the issue of Kashmir and the reliving of Goa from the Portuguese. Jawaharlal Nehru died of stroke in 1964. A statue of Nehru is erected in Pondicherry and is situated in a street facing the statue of Gandhi. The monument is flanked by pillars and the place is host to various events and activities that happen n Pondicherry throughout the year.
