India was under the influence of western countries for almost two centuries. With the British conquering a vast majority of the land, the French, Portuguese and Danish were only left with a small fraction.

When all of India got its independence in 1947, the French settlement of Pondicherry was still under the rule of the French. In 1954 the French India government decided to take votes in the merger with India and the majority voted affirmative. This lead Pondicherry to become a Union territory of India. The voting took place in Keezhoor. In memory of the event a monument was erected at Keezhoor in 1972 to celebrate the occasion. This monument is built with white marbles in a very modern architectural way.
