Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary - Wildlife in Kerala

Sprawling over an area of 344 sq. Km, the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is said to be the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Kerala. It forms an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve which was the first biosphere out of the 14 present in India and was declared as a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1973.

It borders the protected areas of Nagarhole and Bandipur of Karnataka state on the north-east as well as the Mudumalai of Tamil Nadu state on the South-east. This sanctuary comprises of two major sections namely Muthanga towards the east partnering with Tamil Nadu and Tholpetty in the north side bordering Karnataka. The place is full of lush green forests and is rich in biodiversity.

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is blessed with rich wildlife with fascinating animals and unusual migratory birds. Indian Bison, elephant, deer, tiger, gaur, jackals, etc are some of the wildlife species spotted here. Crested hawk eagle, crested serpent eagle, king vultures, Malabar grey hornbill etc are the avifaunal species you can find at the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary.

Flora and fauna

The flora of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is characterized by the Western Ghats and general plantation crops grow here in cool climate. A large portion of this area is covered by coffee plantation. The forest in this area mainly comprises of rosewood, Maruthi, Karimaruthi, Venteak, Vengal and bamboos. A wide variety of fauna are also found in this national reserve.

The sight of the herd of elephants is something that every visitor of this national park dreams of. Apart from elephants, Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is also a home for many other animals like Bison, Tigers, Civet cats, Jungle cats, Wild Dogs, Deer, Bear, Monitor Lizard and a wide variety of Snakes. Avifauna of the park includes Peacock, Babblers, Owls, Woodpeckers and Jungle Fowls that can also be spotted in this reserve.
