The Lord of Rama or Ramanathaswamy Temple is a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva to absolve the sins committed during the Ramayana War at Lanka. The temple is one of 12 Jythorlingas on india. Praying in all those temple would make one attain “Moksha.” As Vishwalinga (the one which Lord Hanuman had brought from Mount Kailash) reached late, in the mean time, Lord Rama and Devi Sita had built a Linga out of sand to absolve their sin of killing Ravana. This temple has 1212 pillars that are 30 feet in height from the centre of the roof to the floor. While the main tower of the Raja Gopura is 53 m tall with individual carvings on every pillar.
The main attraction in Ramanathaswamy temple is the 22 Holy Tirthas or holy water bodies. It is an essential ritual to bath in these 22 sacred ponds before entering the sanctum sanctorum. 22 holy tanks/wells represent 22 arrows in the quiver of Rama.
