Puducherry (Pondicherry)
Puducherry, earlier referred as Pondicherry, truly reflect its French roots at various places. In fact, the first thing to strike anyone about the place is its French connection, the colonial heritage buildings, spiritual sceneries and foreign feel. Once the capital of French colonies, the town still has several French street names and French restaurants. Even the cops wearing red hats adds to the colonised flavour of the place. Pondicherry is also known as the ‘little France’. This former French colony is considered a favourite weekend destination of people from south Indian states especially for those working in the IT sector as they see this place as a perfect weekend getaway destination from Bangalore & Chennai. However, it’s unfortunate that the city has started to lose its charm due to the weekend crowd.
8.5 rating
Made up of four small unconnected districts, Puducherry, Karaikal, Yanam and Mahe, the union territory of Puducherry is bordered by Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. It was under the French rule until 1954. French quarters and Indian quarters enhance the beauty of the city.
Pondicherry is the ultimate place not only for the leisure travellers, even for the devotees. This is the place where Mother (Mirra Alfasa) had created the unique town called Auroville. She believed in unity and created the town that follows neither any religion nor caste. During the inauguration of Auroville, soil from 124 nations and 23 Indian States was placed on the amphitheatre by the people from the respective countries and states.
All the streets in Pondicherry are well maintained and always remain tidy. The building that is in grey colour belongs to Ashram & building in the combination of yellow and white belongs to the Pondicherry Government. Most of the people use the bicycle as their transport. Even today the display boards of the streets are only in French and Tamil in the French Quarter. This union territory has both historical and devotional features.
Best time to visit Pondicherry is between October and March.

Aurobindo founded the Ashram after he left his political career and aspired to inherit spiritualism in his life. The ashram was a small community that expanded over some time as more and more disciples of Aurobindo Ghose gathered around to seek spirituality. A few followers of Aurobindo joined him in the ashram with the same aim of seeking spirituality. Located in eastern Pondicherry, Sri Aurobindo Ashram has become a hub of tourists who are inclined towards divinity and simplicity in their lifestyle.
