Buta Bommalu - Artform of Andhra Pradesh
An ancient folk art form of Andhra Pradesh, also acclaimed as Dance of the Mask, Buta Bommalu kindles everyone’s interest to explore the tradition behind. Buta Bommalu has originated from the small Tanuku district of West Godavari region in Andhra Pradesh.
The dance form is aptly coined as the dancers look like a puppet which is made up of bamboo sticks in the form of a circular basket. The basket measures 8 ft long and 3 ft wide and cowdung, dry grass and wood husk are used in making the basket. The puppet looks like a big toy and obviously attracts children.
Highlights of Buta Bommalu is that no special training is needed for performing this dance. A very simple form of steps to be followed which can be easily learnt by anyone with an observation and practice for a short span of time. This is an important factors drawing the attention of many youngsters inclined to learn this heritage art.
Buta Bommalu is indeed a dumb art form, only with the accompaniment of a cymbal, the entire show can be performed. The pretty toys include forms mostly representing Gods, Goddesses like Shiva, Vishnu, Parvati, Durga and the like.
Though Buta Bommalu looks very simple done without any prerequisites to learn or extraordinary arrangements to perform, this has been a preferred art form in many of the village festivals and important gatherings owing to its simplicity.
Buta Bommalu is a dumb art, still, the continuous body movements of dancers in an uninterrupted rhythmic mode makes the show an invigorating one.
