Introduction:

The Medieval Cholas constructed a revered eighth-century temple amid the bustling streets of their capital, Woraiyur, now integrated into Tiruchirappalli City, Tamil Nadu. History:

A Chola monarch named Nandha Cholan once ruled without an heir, despite his otherwise fortunate life. He fervently prayed to Lord Vishnu for progeny. Moved by his devotion, Lord Vishnu blessed him with a daughter in a dream and vowed she would be wed to Him at the appropriate age. The king discovered the infant on a lotus in a forest tank during a hunting expedition and named her Kamalavalli (Lotus being 'Kamalam' in Tamil). As she matured into a charming princess, Kamalavalli fell for Lord Renganatha Swamy of Srirangam, leading to their grand nuptial, currently celebrated as "Serthi Sevai Festival." In homage to this divine matrimony, Nandha Cholan erected this temple where the deity is endearingly referred to as “Azhagiya Manavala Perumal.”

Architecture:

Employing Dravidian architectural styles from the eighth century, the temple prominently features Azhagiya Manavala Perumal in a seated posture within its sanctum. It also houses exquisite paintings of Nammalvar and other Alwars alongside various incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Notably renewed in the mid-1800s with vibrant frescoes depicting scenes from Garuda Purana and Dharmic teachings by Ikshavahu King Ambareesha. Although originally having 19,000 verses, only 8,000 from Garuda Purana are preserved today explaining virtuous living principles and consequences for human transgressions visible through paintings across the temple walls.
